Big data usage problem

I was just reading about some other members data usage problems and decided to check my own. I just got a iPhone 4 and gave my old 3G to my mother. I updated the os on all phones to 4.0. My data usage is normal on the iPhone 4 but my mothers phone is sending large amounts of data in the middle of the night. The second day she had it it sent 264721kb at roughly 3am. There are also other nights where it sent out 40 mb at 2:59am.This blew right through her 200 mb limit in one night. I noticed that the phone sends out data in the middle of the night a while back and asked apple and AT&T why this happens. They told me all smart phones update while we are most likely sleeping or not using the phone for tasks like MobileMe sync, email, etc. I just noticed the overages and will be calling AT&T to find out why it would send 258mb of data in one night. This isn't right. Please check your own usage if you updated to iOS4. We did not leave the country so no roaming charges. Please let me know if you Are having a similar problem.

yes, loads of people are having the same problem, search the forums.

ive seen some suggested solutions
•turn off 'cellular data' at night
•put it in 'airplane' mode
•or simply shut it down

that should do the trick but the one that would give the least hassle if you dont want to turn off your phone completely would be the OFF setting for cellular data.

also if your looking to save MBs on your monthly plan try setting your email
accounts to fetch MANUALLY, so you can only use data when you open your email acounts THUS only using a bit of data every now and again INSTEAD of letting your phone gobble up your MBs every 15,30, 60, 90 minutes or so.

hope this helps, and hope you find a solution to your problem.

I heard a few people say that this can be caused by the phone pulling in updates for the fraud filter database which is part of safari. It's only supposed to use wifi, but I guess there may be a bug causing it to download the db over the cellular network at night.

Disabling it might cure the data usage problem, but obviously you will lose the protection it offers.

The data is being sent out from the phone. I just checked my bill from last billing period and it sent out 185mb over 12 days with all data being sent out around the same time every night (2:00am to 3:00am). This is outrageous. Since the Internet is rarely used.
I made a trip to my local AT&T store today and they could not give me an answer and called tech support and had me speak to them. I explained the situation and they told me someone could have got a hold of the phone and sent the data out. First off my mother doesn't use the phone after 11:00pm and no one is there to use it. I am really ****** they are not trying to help figure out why this is happening. Does anyone else's iPhone send out data in the middle of the night at the same time everynight? Could something be wrong with the phone or OS causing this problem. I did not have this amount data being transferred until I updated to iOS 4.

At first, I seemed to be using more data than I did with my 3GS also.

I found this information: http://appletoolbox.com/2010/07/mysterious-or-unknown-iphone-data-usage-limiting -data-transfer/

I followed the steps to reset warnings and generally I make sure to close out any apps running in the background as well.

So far, that seems to have helped.

I am concerned though because often when I bring the iPhone out of standby, it shows 3G rather than the wi-fi symbol. At home I have wi-fi running. Almost seems like it's dropping back to 3G when it shouldn't because wi-fi is available. There are other posts about that as well.

BTW - I'm running OS 4.0.1

Hi, I had this issue and seem to have resolved it by:

- Syncing the phone to make backup,

- Erase and reset the phone,

- Restore the previous Settings via Itunes

- On your first sync you should be prompted something about

- Apple might sometimes send information about ...bla...bla..bla"

- Say NO Thanks!

- Data sent goes down...

seems to have worked for me. (so far)

Yea the same thing happened to me except I used up a whole gig in one night!!!! Then I went to the Telus store and the lady there tried to convince me that those numbers were normal. They made me delete all my apps and they thought they had it figured out.. Till I turned my phone off and didn't use it with any apps running for 4 hours and it continued to suck data. I spent a whole day and a half on the phone with Telus and in the store and they kept sending me back and forth between the two of them! No body wanted to fix this problem. In the end, I finally got a new phone and I haven't had the problem since. It is a hardware problem and just fight for a new one. They are going to do everything they can to blame the customers and the running apps but just keep persisiting that there is no way that a phone should be sucking data at 3 in the morning!! Its unbelievable!!!

I have the same problem. It's using massive amounts of data at about the same time every night. The overages for the November cycle were out of control. Everyone wants to blame me when I'm not using that much data. I work from home primarily with wi-fi and I use a computer to access the Internet, not my phone.

Some people said to turn off cellular. That doesn't actually solve the problem because once it's turned back on, it uses massive amounts of data after the cellular is back on. PLUS if there is no Wi-Fi accessible when the cellular is off, you can't use the phone except to make calls - none of the applications will work and aren't the applications the whole point of having an iphone?!

One sales person told me that I need to make sure all the apps are shut down and showed me how to do that but that's not the issue either because I still have the problem.

I turned off iCloud thinking that might be the issue. Nope. I then deleted all the information in iCloud and that still didn't solve the problem. I have deleted numerous apps that were "new" in the past few months and the problem is still not solved.

I was told by ATT and a sales person that the phone sends data via cellular when we are sleeping. Ok so what about the fact that my entire home is wireless?! Oh here's the answer: when the phone is also "sleeping" and sending data, it uses cellular, not Wi-Fi even though I'm connected to Wi-Fi. Holy Mother of God.

I think I've narrowed down the issue to the new stupid software upgrade and there's no way to reverse it.

The BEST was when I was gone for Thanksgiving and had the **** thing turned off. Somehow in that week, I used an entire Gig of data when I turned the cellular back on after returning home. The mere act of turning on cellular was enough to use a Gig.

SO, Goodbye IPhone4. I bought a windows phone. I'm not crazy about it and will probably return it for Samsung. I liked how user friendly iPhone is but it's freaking worthless to me if I can't use it outside of Wi-Fi range and I'm not paying massive amounts of money for overages. This past month I blew through somewhere around five to six gigs.

And to those who want to tell me that using ABC or Netflix on my phone in bed is what caused it... you are mistaken!! I can actually still use my deactivated iphone4 here at home to watch stuff using wireless. There is no data usage when on Wi-Fi; the phone is deactivated but the applications still work.

So Long iPhone4. It was sweet while it lasted. Too bad Apple didn't care enough to fix you.
