printing creates a narrow unreadable slit. why???

Check your printer settings. Are you able to print a regular pdf document? Try downloading the Adobe reader if you experience a problem and see what happens there when you open it in Adobe and then try to print it.
Can you please explain exactly what you are trying to do. Did you save a full screenshot from a website in Safari? That would save as a pdf, that is normal. However, how it prints has to do with your printer setup.
yes, i took a full page screenshot from an article on safari. then went to print it, and it did the print in a narrow compressed line that is unreadable being such small print: the same compressed line that occurs when i want to crop some of the article. so i save the article to my downloads folder, where i can read it normally; then went to print, and it again printed the narrow slit?!

I was referring to the fact you stated you found a way to accomplish your print goal. I was just wondering what that way in case a similar question was asked in the future and someone found this thread in a search. I appreciate your response.

so, if i make safari articles "reader" format, then save to my downtload folder, then i can print as "reader", & it prints fine.
however, if i don't do reader format for safari, and screenshot the full screen, and then save as pdf to my download folder, when i go to print it appears as the thin compressed line that occurs when i would try to crop the article (even though i did NOT crop this article.).
i suspect the cropping tool is creating some problem even when i don't even use it?!
