How to use an old OPTEX Digiscan1 with latest IOS software?

I have a MacIOS 10.15.7 and a really old Optex digital scanner for 35 mm slides. Is there any driver/software for this product that I could use? I came with a Microsoft drive, but haven't used Microsoft for ages.

This scanner was sold under different brand names (Optex /Ion /Reflecta) it looks something like this:

It is not a scanner, its a camera sensor built in to a housing with a light to illuminate the slides, therefore traditional scanners drivers were not used for this device

depending on the exact model, try the following

  • if it has an SD card slot installed, insert an SD memory card in the scanner and save to it then use the card to transfer to the Mac

  • if it has a USB connector, plug in a USB cable and connect to the Mac and try each of these options

- open Image Capture application located in the Applications folder and select the device

- open a finder window and see if the device is listed in the side bar then select the device

Arcsoft is for Windows computers, the Mac has inbuilt software you can use: Photo Booth to capture and Preview or Phots to colour correct:

  • connect the scanner to the Mac with USB
  • power on the device and adjust the slides for capture
  • go to the applications folder and open Photobooth
  • go to the Camera menu and select the Optex device
  • to capture the image, go to File > Take Photo (command > Enter)
  • when you have saved the file on to the Mac, open in either in Preview or Photos application to crop and adjust colour and brightness

On the basis that we know the Optex is a camera and not a scanner, the Optex will not be listed in the Finder.

As the power light operates, it confirms there is an electronic connection, so far so good.

try this:

connect the scanner to the Mac with USB

check the power light is on

place a slide in the scanner

Open Photo Booth application

press the copy button on the top of the Optex device

go to the Camera menu and select the Optex device it should be called OVT Scanner

As an example, I have an endoscope (miniature camera) connected, it shows as YPCendoscope:

press the copy button again on the top of the Optex device

see if there is any image produced in Photo Booth

The above procedure works on my Macs with webcams, still digital camera, endoscope security camera - all are USB devices.

If this does not work, the only other thing to try is using a windows computer.

Hi again Gary, I am so appreciative of your advice and am trying everything. I think the problem is that when the USB is plugged in, the computer does not recognize the device. There is not any separate power cord, so it get its power from the USB and the blue light comes on. That's it. When I am looking in finder, the device does not show up. And when I follow your advice with Photo Booth, the Camera view only shows my computers internal camera.Any ideas how to get the computer to recognize the device. I have attached a photo of the original box and the Optex device FYI. Regards Mats

Gary, thanks so much for your advice. You are right, this is the Optex device. Mine doesn’t have any SIM card, so I tried the USB cable. However, it doesn’t show up in my Finder window or after doing the Image capture. The instructions call for ArcSoft PhotoImpression 6 as well as the Digiscan1 driver. Anything else I could try?

I really appreciate your suggestions. Thank you. Regards Mats

Again, many thanks Gary.

I tried it and nothing shows under camera other than Built in camera. Don't know why, as it would have been great to use it. I do have an old Windows computer that I will try to dig out and test. Otherwise, I assume I have to buy a more modern device that also works on IOS. Thank you so very much for all your help. It has been very exciting to try it. Happy Holidays to you.

Regards

Mats
