mouse highlighting with a single click

my mouse is highlighting with a single click. it doesn't seem to matter which mouse i use (apple wireless or logitech usb). if i click on the screen it highlights portions of the text and i have to click over the highlighted portion to remove the highlight. i'm a long time mac user with a 2018 refurbished mac book pro bought 9 months ago. any suggestions to get fix this pesky issue?

Mouse highlights instead of single clicks. Often when I try to single click (place a cursor between letters, or on a timeline in editing software like Pro Tools, etc.) I'm getting highlighted areas instead. I'm a longtime mac user and have used scores of macs, mice and trackpads and have never had this problem with any other computer. The problem is the same using a Magic Mouse, a wired Apple USB optical mouse, or the built-in trackpad so it's not hardware related. I've always preferred a fast "Tracking Speed" mouse preference so I thought changing that to a slower speed would help highlight less but the problem persists. To reiterate, I'm constantly highlighting areas by accident, as if between clicking and releasing the mouse is registering movement that I'm not intending. Anyone ever had this problem? Can't find anyone else having posted about it. Using a MacBook Pro 15-inch 2016 with High Sierra.

Should the Mid 2015 15" MacBook Pro Trackpad Click? Okay, I feel so dumb. I recently got an iMac and so I have been going back and forth between my MacBook Pro and iMac. I feel like before when I tried to highlight text, that I could click using the trackpad, but now when I try to highlight, my trackpad doesn't click. BUT, this might be because I am used to using my bluetooth mouse for my iMac now. Is my trackpad supposed to click on my Mid 2015 15" Retina MacBook Pro and if not, how in the heck do you highlight text? It only partially highlights whenever I double click on say, an email address. I can't get it to highlight the whole thing. Thanks in advance.

Double clicks when I just want single click So I just moved over to a new Mac Studio with Ventura 13.2.1. I'm getting double-click behavior *sometimes* when all I want is a single click. I have slowed the double click speed down to its slowest setting (slider at leftmost) in settings->accessibility->pointer control, and I have the same issue whether I'm using an Apple Magic Mouse or a Kensington wired trackball (so I know it's not the device). Super annoying; I'll click on a file to get some info about it and it starts to open, or I'll single click on some parameter to modify and it'll act like I double clicked it. Any thoughts about what else I can try? TIA! rich
