I need to fix my iPod touch. I am locked out. Too many failed attempts with the passcode.

My iPod touch is disabled. It says to connect to iTunes. I have tried several times with using my laptop to connect to iTunes and go thru the steps to fix this. It will not work. It always times out before I can get the software to download. What else can I do?
