I have worked through all suggested fixes ... date & time set to automatic, common Apple I.D , FaceTime and iMessage logged out and back in again etc to no avail.
My iPhone and iPad both continue to work fine on FaceTime on the same wifi connection
What have I missed ?

They won't be able to fix it. Have already spent weeks on the issue. iOS/iPadOS 14 can't connect to older devices (such as my Mac is running 10.12.6). iPhones and iPads running 13.2.3 still work perfectly.

We understand that you are having some difficulty with faceTime on your Mac, and we'd like to help. Begin by creating as new, test administrator account on your Mac, and see if the issue continues there.
Set up users, guests, and groups on Mac
Once that is done, Contact Apple Support with the results to continue.

I have the same issue and no one at Apple has been able to resolve it. My Mac is running 10.12.6 (and I don't wish to update it). The Mac can no longer connect, via FaceTime, to any iPads running iPadOS 14 or higher. It can, however, still connect to iPhones and iPads running 13.2.3.

I've now followed your instructions and set up a test admin account ... no change , same fault . Will contact Apple Support too
