My iPhone has been frozen for 2 hrs in the middle of an update with the Verifying Update message on screen. I can't shut it down and now also have an open SOS call that I can't end. How can I restart without having to wait for the battery to run out. Have tried everything.

Hi - I have tried that and whilst the Slide to power off bar appears I can't slide it to turn it off as the screen is frozen with this Verifying Update message whirring away.
Yes it worked when I did it again and just held the side button for another few seconds. Thanks!
Can you go thru the article again and double check? If the power off slider appears, I don't believe you are performing the correct procedure.
If your details are correct and you have an iPhone 11, do this:
edit: I just did the force restart on my iPhone 12 Pro and I was mistaken, the power slider does appear..
but if I keep holding the side button for another few seconds then it does the restart
