Siri will not read messages from whatsapp when using airpods gen 2

Siri will not read messages from whatsapp when using airpods gen 2. I have made sure that the settings in notification and messages all have the functions enabled but i just receive a ping and siri does not read out who the whatsapp is from. I have connected the airpods to another iPhone to see if it was something in settings on my phone but its still the same on the other phone. I have a brand new set of airpods that i have tried as well just in case the airpods were defective in some way but they too have the same issue so its not the airpods its a setting on the phones?
