How good are the older apple watches?

My husband wants to buy me an Apple Watch 3 for Christmas. I already have an iMac that won’t update to Big Sur, so I’m worried that I’ll have the same plight if he bought me the older Apple Watch that (I believe) will not upgrade to the latest Apple Watch operating system (7, I think). Any help is greatly appreciated. Thx!

iPhone 11, iOS 14

From Apple's website: watchOS 7 compatibility.

watchOS 7 requires iPhone 6s or later with iOS 14 or later and one of the following Apple Watch models:

  • Apple Watch Series 3
  • Apple Watch Series 4
  • Apple Watch Series 5
  • Apple Watch SE
  • Apple Watch Series 6

Apple is still selling the GPS version of Apple Watch Series 3 ((Aluminum) as new. Anything can change, but I would think a Series 3 would be supported for a couple of years. You should also notice that a minimum of iPhone 6s with iOS 14 installed are required.
