In previous software versions you could double tap the iPhone screen to wake it from sleep. This was changed to a single tap for some reason which now makes the phone wake too easily and while in your pocket.
Is there a way to turn double tap back on?

There has to my knowledge NEVER been a double tap to wake. I did read where if someone jailbrakes their phone, they can get double tap to wake, but it's not possible otherwise, nor has it been possible.
There is Tap to Wake. I have never heard of double tap to wake iPhone.
The general guidance if you keep your iPhone in your pocket is to turn Tap to Wake off.
It definitely used to do it when I bought the phone in March. Then it changed after an update, can’t remember which one.
When it changed my phone started waking up in my pocket and ghost dialing and messaging people.
Had to deactivate it completely as the feature is now unusable for me.
Thank you. I guess because I've always used that tap, it didn't occur to me at first. However, I'm still not sure that it used to be double-tap. I cannot find any history information about that feature being double-tap.
While it is your own business, not having a passcode on the iPhone means that anything you have on the iPhone is subject to access if you set the phone down or it is stolen. Not the best idea if you have sensitive information on it, including mail accounts, etc.
If you have a passcode on the iPhone, it cannot unlock itself and make a phone call. Had you activated something in Accessibility?
What did you have to deactivate completely, the iPhone?
One place to check since you don't use or tap to wake is:
Settings > Accessibility > Touch
Do you have anything turned on for Back Tap? If you do, turn off double and triple tap back.
Must have imagined double tapping my phone to wake it up for the first 3 months I had it.
I do not ever recall that behavior. I'm also not aware of any setting on the iPhone to change waking the phone to a double-tap.
I don’t use passcode.
I deactivated tap to wake. Never used raise to wake because of similar issues.
