Apple Support - Malwarebytes and Cleanmymac

I recently communicated with apple support via chat for my late 2015 imac 27" retina, running macos 11.1

I noticed the fans are on more often and louder than it has in the past. I assumed it must be dusty inside, but since cannot open, I asked for advice for cleaning it. (I assume they would say bring it in to apple genius).

Anyway, things took a different turn, the agent asked for a screenshot of my activity monitor, to which she said that I have malware installed. I asked which one, and she said cleanmymac. Now I know that cleanmymac has been controversial in the past, but it IS sold through the apple app store, so how can that be malware? I asked her that, then she said oh well it slows down your computer. Fine enough, however, my mac is actually running quite nicely, and I use the cleanmymac to uninstall apps (as opposed to dragging to trash which leaves lots of files behind).

She then asked me to install malwarebytes to scan for malware. I'm wondering if Apple has a contract with this company, because every agent instructs me to install this software. Needless to say, every time I run it, it finds no malware. However, my computer is now running at a snails pace. I installed the free version so no real time monitoring, but it does seem to add an icon on the upper right hand side of the screen next to the time.

So my questions are

1) Is Cleanmymac officially considered malware by apple? If so, how can they sell it on their app store?

2) Anyone else find that malwarebytes slows down their computer? Is it necessary to have? I have the free version of avira running which does real time scanning.

3) Regarding the loud fan noises, I reset SMC and did the NVRAM and PRAM. Other than spraying compressed air into the vents, anything else I can do?

Thanks

P.S. Respectfully, this isn't a post whether macs need antivirus software or not. Apple support was the one telling me to install malwarebytes, so "macs don't need antivirus" statements aren't really going to help.

As far as I know, neither Apple, Apple Support, nor we, your fellow users, have any contract with Malwarebytes. It remains the Go To recommended application by myself, and peers in the support communities because it just works. It is also readily removeable from its Help menu.

Each new download of Malwarebytes comes with a 14-day trial of its "real-time" ad/malware detection engine, that stops working after the trial period, and is what a subscription re-activates. The downside of this "real-time" feature is that Malwarebytes elevates the run priority of that "real-time" protection engine process above all other running processes except the UNIX kernel. There is no user means to de-activate that engine prior to the end of the trial period, other than uninstalling the application. If there is anything else on your iMac that might be slowing it down (e.g. Fusion drive, or anti-virus software) then Malwarebytes trial will magnify that effect.

Generally, we have been saying for years to avoid installing any anti-virus, memory management, or cleaner category applications because they have been known to generate posts here from users who have had problems traced to their usage. If a vendor, and in your example, CleanMyMac is accepted into the Mac App Store, it is because they followed all of Apple's criterion to achieve that status. Neither we, nor Apple support are part of that vetting process, so I cannot comment further on it. Just because an application is in the Mac App Store, does not mean that it is harmless, nor that Apple could remove it from the store.

Have you replaced the drive in your iMac prior to the fan noises? We have experience with those that have replaced the iMac hard drive, and not used, or connected the heat sensor cable that would allow the Mac to regulate its thermal properties. A racing fan is the result. If this is not the case, then I would advise against using compressed air on the vents and instead, a small vacuum. You want to pull dust out, not push it further in.

As I mentioned, Malwarebytes will run an elevated priority process (its "realtime" component) for the first 14 days of the new installation trial, and then that process goes dormant after the trial period, and can only be restarted via an optional subscription. That does not prevent one from running Malwarebytes after the trial period has ended, and without a subscription.

You should never blow air into the bottom air intakes.

You should have shut down and vacuumed off the bottom air intakes.

Now you have most likely caused yourself a worse cooling problem by blowing the dust that was on the outside of the intake grill up into the iMac's Fan and Heat sink.

Viruses and Malware are two different things.

You do not need anti-virus software, but may benefit from an occasional malware check.

MalwareBytes is a good program, but it is best to just occasional run it manually to check for malware.

CleanMyMac is junk-ware, it will do nothing but take your money and leave you with a slow or borked macOS.

Thanks everyone for your replies.

I , unlike your comments, have experienced significant slowdowns running malwarebytes whereas no slowdowns using avira or cleanmymac. I use cleanmymac really only for the uninstall features, I don't use any of the other features. Can anyone recommend a good uninstall app that will take care of all the leftover files?

I'm curious to know what exactly is "junk-ware" aspect of cleanmymac?

The issue i have with malrewarebytes is that it is always running even when not in use. I would rather just open the app and run the scan as needed, without the overhead slowing down the mac.

Lastly for the dust, I was told not to use a vacuum as vacuum can create static electricity which can damage the imac components.
