How to unblock a blocked plug-in

Catalina 10.15.7 In Safari when clicking on a corporate PDF file, the response is a black screen with the text: "blocked plug-in". How do I unblock the plug-in to view the PDF?

MacBook Air 13″, macOS 10.13

Hi poor_yorick,

Thanks for reaching out here in the Apple Support Communities. We see that you are getting an error message about a "blocked plug-in" while trying to view a PDF in Safari.

We're glad to help.

You could manage plug-ins in High Sierra macOS 10.13 and earlier, but later versions don't use plug-ins in the same way. This alert may indicate that Safari detects a security vulnerability with the file you are trying to open.

There are a couple of things to test to isolate a little more:

  • Does this happen with every PDF from this same website?
  • Are you able to right-click (Control-click) and save the PDF and then open it in the Finder?
  • update to Big Sur macOS 11 for the latest version for Safari. this explains how to back up your Mac and update:
