External boot drive to repair internal drive?

Hi,

I had been having major issues while upgrading to Catalina from Mojave.Tech support couldn't help so they recommended me to take the computer to a technician. There seems to be some error in the hard drive giving status error 34.Even Time Machine install kept giving errors & stalled.

I was wondering if I can boot the Mac from an external bootable drive & then make the needed repairs on the hard drive, since I could not do a repair from disk utilities.

Pls let me know your opinion.

Thanks

iMac 27″ 5K, macOS 10.14

You might try this:

https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201372

... once you're able to boot up the macOS installer on your removable medium (USB flash drive), select the Disk Utility from the Installer Menu and see if you can repair the hard drive.

You'll want to make sure that if Mojave is on your hard drive, you load the Mojave Installer on your external boot up device.

Which version of macOS is on your internal HD... is it still Mojave, and is it still formatted as HFS+ (journaled)? If so, you would still be able to run Disk Utility from the external bootable drive to verify/repair your internal HD.

I would boot from the external drive, and then first run Disk Utility on your internal HD to verify the drive and see if it reports errors before attempting any repairs.

I'm glad you were able to start up with the bootable drive.

Did Disk Utility erase the drive as part of the repair, or did you repair, then erase the drive?

Assuming that the drive is now fully erased, and the Time Machine restore fails, you might consider reinstalling Sierra on to your internal HD and see if your macintosh will boot up from the it. If it does, you can then try to update it directly from Software Update.

Please let me know if you were successful in restoring from Time Machine. If your HD was corrupted, then you would have to restore from a backup that was made before things went awry.

I’m glad you were at least able to restore to Mojave. There are many reports on this forum of users (myself included) who have encountered problems using Catalina on external drives - the computer will not recognize the drive at startup.

The latest update to Catalina seems to have created an issue with using external USB drives. At this time, I’d suggest you continue using Mojave until this ‘new’ problem is resolved.

Good luck to you, and I’ll let you know if a solution to the external USB drive problem (or work around) has been found.

You should be able to migrate your third party s/w as well, provided it has not been corrupted.

Well I tried to install OS from the internet but I get this message saying ,'Recovery server cold not be found'.So now I went to a time machine backup & restoring it.When I tried Time machine previously before I got myself into all this drama, it failed. But now that the disk is cleaned up & repaired I trust it will go smooth.

Really appreciate your help on this.Customer service wasn't of much help & didn't offer these solutions like you did.

Thanks.

Thanks to your guidance, time machine worked this time & I restored it to April 2019 with Mojave to be on the safe side.Yes I repaired the internal drive & erased the drive.Since the recovery server was not located I thought the best thing would be to go for Time Machine backup.I may have to update some plugins & stuff .I see things are a bit slow now to start with & the spinning ball appears but hopefully it should all be settled.

I did not restore the most recent backup just to make sure I don't get any virus in, but will I be able to migrate certain programs such as the Library without having to go through a complete restore from scratch? Since I'm a musician using Logic X I had a lot of 3rd party plugins.

My intention was upgrading to Catalina & in the process I landed up in a mess.Glad I'm out of it.I am going to try downloading Catalina later on an external drive to see how things work. Most folks on the Logic forum don't seem to recommend Catalina though.

Hi Mr.William,

i needed your input on another issue I ran into.I was hoping to run Big Sur or Catalina on an external USB bootable drive & so went through the process & got it onto the drive.

I got Big Sur on an external bootable drive using the terminal...& everything went well

But when booting from the ext drive I see the language drop down menu screen & then everything freezes & I am unable to do anything from there. Nothing happens when I press enter or move the wireless mouse. I posted on a different thread but had no idea how to get in touch with you as Apple techs on chat simply did not have a clue & are of little help like before!

You may wonder why i am attempting the Catalina & Big Sur route! I purchased softwares on the Apple store with codes & when trying to register & install those codes it did not go through & was asking for me to upgrade to Catalina or Big Sur.If Apple could only get it registered i wont even go the uograde path for now. However upgrading has been so much of an issue now with these hurdles.I would really appreciate your input on what I should do. Thanks

Thanks.

Thanks a lot for responding. The imac is 2017 27” .This is what happens: The installer runs for about 5 mins & opens up on a blank screen with the language menu. But then the keyboard & mouse doesn’t function at that point. I have a feeling that something disables them . If it functions, I would hit enter to select the English language option & click on continue to proceed further.

External usb drive is 120 GB.I will try a different drive. The imac has about 75 gb free space.

Hi Ministrel,

Does the installer freeze AFTER you've made the language selection, or does it freeze immediately? Your iMac may be having an issue with the BlueTooth keyboard/mouse. Do you have a wired keyboard that you might try?

Which model 27" iMac do you have -- I assume that it is compatible with macOS Big Sur. Even if it is, there are several reasons for the Big Sur installer to freeze:

  1. The external drive -- it must be at least 16 GB (minimum), preferably larger.
  2. The external drive might be corrupted -- if it is a thumb drive, or flash drive, you might want to try another one and see if that resolves the issue.
  3. The drive to which you're installing Big Sur must have at least 35GB of free storage available.
  4. The installation process has been know to take quite a long time (several hours).

My own iMac is not compatible with macOS Big Sur, so unfortunately I cannot attempt the installation procedure.
