My photos that were saved on my computer since 2013 suddenly disappeared after backing up my iPhone and now I can't find them. I never had a time machine backup or anything since I assumed they were automatically saved onto the computer. Is there any way to recover them?

As we understand it, you've had a number of photos saved to your MacBook going back several years that vanished upon backing up your iPhone.
To aid us in isolating this issue, do you use iCloud Photos? If so, visit iCloud.com from a web browser, sign in and go to the Photos section. Let us know if your missing photos are there. You can also see more info about iCloud Photos below:
If that is not the case, can you confirm if you backed up your iPhone or synced it? Syncing your iPhone can edit photos if the option is selected:
