If you mean trading it in as part of a new purchase then yes. If you’re just wanting to do a swap and get an unlocked device in exchange for your locked one then no. You would have to purchase a new one and get trade-in value for your locked one.
If you owe the carrier anything, you will have to pay that off yourself and then close the account with your current carrier. If you bought the current phone through the carrier, you’re still obligated for whatever contract you signed with them.
Yes.
Sorry I just re-read what I wrote (auto correct) but if I have a carrier (Xfinity) locked iPhone could I trade in for a sim free to activate on another mobile service?

Is it carrier locked because you still owe Xfinity money on it? If so, you’ll have to pay off your balance owed with Xfinity first so that you actually own your iPhone and can then trade it in.
If nothing is owed to XFinity, are you eligible to get them to unlock it? I don’t know what their unlock policy is. Even if they won’t unlock it, as long as you own it outright and owe nothing to XFinite, then it is your property to trade in, and Apple’s trade in partner will accept a carrier locked device as trade in (although the value may be less than if it were unlocked).
But the point is if it was financed through Xfinity and you still owe on it, it’s not legally yours to trade in or sell until you settle with Xfinity first. After that, it’s your property, locked or not, to do with as you wish. And Apple’s trade in partner (and others like Gazelle, Amazon) will pay for locked trade ins, just at less offered market value than unlocked devices).
