You had initially created an Apple ID say example1@gmail.com , it could be set with secondary authentication account in which three answers for security questions , rescue mail address and its password , date of birth was added .

You signed out this Apple ID from Mac system preferences and then created an Apple ID say example2@icloud.com , so the Apple ID was created with iCloud domain and established in the Mac .

Then you forgot the Apple ID password say example2@icloud.com

Go to iforgot.apple.com from the same browser , type the Apple ID say example2@icloud.com and click on continue .

If the Apple ID is set up with two factor authentication , type the trusted verified number in the empty fields , click on continue .

A notification appears on the top corner of the desktop screen click on show .

System preferences opened , a circle rotates after a short while , click on reset password .

Note : the iCloud mail address is same as Apple ID , you might be using this and set up with iCloud mail accounts in Mac .
