Depending on what version you're trying to update to (I'm assuming it's OS X 10.11 El Capitan?), your current hardware might be a limiting factor. Either way, give this support article a thorough read:

And please, pretty please, don't forget to make a Time Machine backup beforehand...you really can't overstate the importance of a backup!
