Software update is required to connect to your iOS device - Which software? Need more info.

Can anyone please clarify what exactly this software update is doing? Is it an iOS update, or OSX update?

I ask because I am on Mojave and do not want to update my OS to Big Sur, so just want to make sure that is not what will happen. Thanks.

iPhone 12 mini, iOS 14

It appears to be an upgrade within iTunes. I say "appears" because the iTunes version number did not change for me but I can confirm it does not update iOS and it does not update macOS. The "install" takes less than ten minutes to download and execute and after that, I was able to see and sync my phone in iTunes. My phone is a 12 Mini (iOS 14.1) and my MacBook Pro is on Mojave.
