Airport Extreme soft reset

I have an airport extreme. I was trying to add an express as an extender and it wanted a password for the extreme base station. I entered my 7 digit password and it does not work. I have tried other passwords to no avail. I have read that I have to soft reset the extreme and I will have 5 minutes to change it. My question is, that if that doesn't work, will my extreme go back to the original settings? I am by no means an expert and I am afraid I will have to reconfigure things and I wouldn't know where to go for help.

Yes, it will.

The password you are after is wireless more than likely. And could well be the same as the admin password.

NOTE.. if you mistakenly hard reset.. you will need to reconfigure the Extreme but this is easy. There is a wizard in the Airport Utility of your Mac or iOS device that will assist.

Soft reset is very short press of the reset button.. 1-2sec.. you will know if successful because front LED will begin to flash orange.

You can look up the current password in the airport utility.. click the icon of the Airport, then click the edit button that appears in the summary.

It should also be saved in the keychain.

Here is set of instructions for obtaining password from keychain.
