Weird Horizontal line in Safari iPhone 12?

Hello. Anyone get this weird line across their screen when using Safari in iOS 14.3. I just bought a new iPhone 12 and this is really annoying. It isn’t always there, but some pages I go to cause it, others don’t. Sometimes going back to the original Google search and it’s still there, but if o stop scrolling it goes away. But if I go back to that page, it comes back. Weird. I have a screen recording of the line in action, but apparently can’t post a video here. So I screen shot the video paused on the line.

iPhone 12, iOS 14

The case has nothing to do with it. It’s something to do with Safari. Many websites don’t seem to load properly to fit within the screen so the line is actually showing left to right scroll like it’s zoomed in slightly automatically. What’s even more stupid is that Apple designed that line to be right I. The middle of the screen when you zoom into a webpage. Why? But the issue is that it defaults to a barely noticeable zoom on a lot of different websites. So in order to get it to go away, I have to zoom out, wait for the line to disappear, then it’s fine. If I click a link to go deeper into a website, I have to repeat that process. If I go back, I have to do it again. It’s super annoying.

some websites don’t do it. I don’t know why some do and some don’t. There doesn’t seem to be any rhyme or reason to it. My iPhone 7 did not do it with the same iOS version so it must be the phone. 🤷‍♂️

Hi hitlength,

I agree, motion effects makes me feel nauseous. BUT you can still turn the effects off AND not have the ridiculous mid-screen scroll bar. You just need to turn OFF 'prefer cross-fade transitions'. Allow me to repost the steps with more explanation:

Settings - Accessibility

  • Turn OFF 'prefer cross-fade transitions' (this is the one that must be OFF)
  • Turn OFF 'reduce motion' (now the nauseating effects are ON)
  • Restart device
  • Turn ON 'reduce motion' (now the nauseating effects are OFF)

(Keep 'prefer cross-fade transitions' OFF. It comes back if you do.)

I really hope this helps.

Umut

PS: Maybe they have already fixed it with the iOS/iPadOS 14.5? Can't tell, yet I'll upgrade today.

That didn't work for me. I think I've figured out what it actually is, tho I have no solution to fix it. It appears that some websites seem to load in a zoomed in view, and the line is actually the horizontal scroll indicator that should be at the bottom of the screen. It doesn't happen on all websites, but if I pinch to zoom in on any website, this scroll indicator always appears in the middle of the screen. It's so weird that it doesn't seem to be a more common problem. I wonder if it has to do with the fact that I restored from an iPhone 7 backup when I got the phone. Maybe there's some leftover code or setting that got carried over that is causing the iPhone 12 to display this odd behavior.

Hurrah! Thank you. I’m running an older iPad 2 and after updating to iOS 14.2 after being nagged by my iPad regularly, the annoying horizontal line appeared in the middle of Safari screens when zooming and scrolling.

I turned Reduce Motion off and restarted my iPad, and the line has gone, or I sometimes see it at the bottom of the screen where it’s not annoying.

Thank you for your answer.

Unfortunately, that solution means suffering through the obnoxiously exaggerated motion effects. I don’t quite understand why reducing motion causes Safari to move the horizontal scroll bar to the middle of the stupid screen. It should be at the bottom no matter . What’s next? The vertical scroll bar will be in the middle of the screen, too? This is a temporary fix, but Apple certainly needs to address this absurdity.

Thanks. Knock on wood, I haven't had the problem in a while. To be honest, I'm not sure what kind of case mine is. It's clear and smooth and has a MagSafe (?) symbol on the back (large white circle with a small vertical line under it). I usually get Tech 21 cases, but I bought this one at the Apple Store, and I'm not sure if they carry Tech 21. (I'm trying to find the Tech 21 case for iPhone12 that replaced the Evo Check (smooth and sort of flexible), but I haven't been able to determine if one exists.
