Monitor settings on Menu Bar missing

In Catalina my MacBook Pro 2018 with external monitor used to be able to display a small icon on the menu bar which allowed me to access settings like the screen resolution quickly.

If I go into display settings via System Prefs there is a checkbox which asks if you want to see this item on the menu - but it never appears.

I spoke to someone at apple who could replicate the problem. They have escalated the issue but apparently not all users are effected. I have 2 monitors if you count the laptop build in one. Maybe Big Sur only considers external monitors and therefore does not show the menu items on a MacBook.

I have the same issue on a MacBook Pro Late 2013 + Apple Thunderbolt display and my MacBook Pro 2018 + Benq 4k Monitor.

Howdy,

I see the Display menu option but it doesn't give quick access to resolution changes.

So I finally searched the App Store for help and found EasyRes by Chris Miles which is free and is working fine with Big Sur. Of course there may be others, but this is doing fine for me. (similar to SwitchRes but Free!)

Note you can hide resolutions you don't want to use.
