MacBook recommendations for graphic designers/creatives?

I was wondering if there are any creatives or tech savvy individuals here who could offer some advice for purchasing a new MacBook.

I recently returned a new MacBook Air M1 chip (base model with 8GB, was going to buy a hard drive for extra storage) due to it simply not working, especially with Adobe CC that I use for my work. Before this I had a MacBook Pro from 2015 which was actually great, but was just getting old and it was time for an updated device.

I was going to go in store to speak to someone about this, but my area has just gone into lockdown again so I can’t.

if anyone has any recommendations for a good MacBook for a creative who frequently uses Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign, Lightroom, Premiere Pro, After Effects etc it would be much appreciated.

EG:

-Should I be looking to get a device with 8GB or 16GB RAM?

-Will a 2020 device with an Intel Core i5 processor be sufficient?

-Should I wait for Adobe to develop M1 native applications and repurchase an M1 chip device?

-Is there any difference between an Air and Pro with the same RAM and storage in terms of usability?

Any help/advice would be much appreciated, or if anyone has any links they could direct me to? Thanks!

I’m an IT Professional with a background in high-end Repro, Print and Design.

Don’t waste your time on an Air. Go for the Pro. Intel i5 or i7 (your choice) with the maximum RAM the one you go for can take and you can afford. 512GB internal SSD is fine but make sure you buy at least 2 larger external drives as well. Use both for backup and storage. 2TB as a minimum should be enough but if you can afford larger capacity ones then do so. I’d go for the 15” model over the 13” one. Adobe CC takes up a lot of ‘display room’ so think about a large external monitor in addition to the Pro Display. Photoshop palettes can stay on that whilst you work on your projects on the larger monitor.

Good luck

You should definitely go with a MacBook from the Pro lineup. These computers are designed for the kind of work you do. As you were working with adobe programs I'd definitely recommend you to pick 16gb of ram. Adobe programs always require a lot of ram so expanding in that area will ease your work flow. As for the processor I'd say that a i7 or i5 would work great, personally I'd pick an intel processor just because they're a little more reliable in my opinion. This one would get the job done for sure (https://www.apple.com/shop/buy-mac/macbook-pro/13-inch-space-gray-2.0ghz-intel-core-i5-quad-core-processor-with-intel-iris-plus-graphics-512gb?part=MWP42LL/A#)

Since you mentioned wanting to speak with someone from Apple, you can check out your options for that here: Contacting Apple

Regarding specifics for the Adobe suite, we'd suggest contacting them to see what recommendations they have. You can use this link: Contact Customer Care
