iphone XS Max wont sync on Imac running catalina

Since I installed Catalina my problems with my iMac and iPhone have begun.

When I connect my iPhone XS Max (IOS 14.2) using an Apple USB cable to my iMac (Late 2013) running Catalina 10.15.7 (19H114). The only option I get is restore iPhone and update (which is greyed out). So I can only click restore and not update. I don't want to restore the iPhone is there any other way to overcome this situation. I have tried restarting the iPhone, resetting it etc. to no effect. Please help.

Howdy Tellferoz,

It sounds like you're unable to sync your iPhone with your iMac. You’re in the right place to find a resolution.

It seems as if your computer sees your iPhone as possibly being in recovery mode. If restarting your iPhone and Mac didn't help, test in safe mode and see if the issue continues there:
