If I use quick start does it mean that I don’t have to backup my old phone to transfer the data?

I just bought an iPhone SE 2020 and I haven’t backed up my old phone 6S since 2018 because of storage and now that I’m finally trying to back it up after buying storage it says it’s going to take up to 7 days to fully back up and I’m wondering if I can just use quick start to transfer everything to the SE without having to worry about doing the backup first just so I can save time. Will I be able to completely transfer everything using quick start or will there be some data missing because I haven’t backed it up? Any information is very appreciated :))

Hello Tinytallullah,

It sounds like you have some questions about Quick Start and data transfer to a new device.

Quick Start allows you to quickly set up a new device, however, you'll still need to restore from an iCloud backup to transfer the rest of your content and data. This will at least allow you to start using your new device right away until the backup to iCloud is completed on your old device.

Once Quick Start has completed, you'll need to follow these steps next.

You do have other options besides Quick Start, such as restoring directly from an iCloud backup, or a restore using Finder/iTunes.

Thank you for your advice! I managed to get it all up and running, the only issue I now have is that my old phone deleted most of the photos that had been uploaded to iCloud in order to download the newest IOS because I didn’t have enough storage at the time and now that I have a lot more iPhone and iCloud storage I’d love to know how I can get all of those photos back onto my phone

Hey Tinytallullah,

If the missing photos are still in iCloud, then we know that they aren't lost.

On the new iPhone, make sure that iCloud for Photos is enabled. You can find this setting in Settings > Photos > iCloud Photos.

If it is on, then you can turn it off then back on to restart the sync process. While the photos sync, you'll want to make sure of the following:

Here's more info about iCloud Photos.

Thanks for getting back to us, Tinytallullah,

We're glad to hear that you've got your new iPhone set up.

As far as the missing photos, the steps in these guides should help you recover them, if possible.

Let us know if that helps, and have a good rest of your week!
