Whenever I open maps on my new, extremely expensive, top of the line iPhone, the compass reading is very wrong. Most of the time the map says I’m going in the opposite direction. When I open the compass app, it concurs with maps that I am heading East, when it’s obvious that I am headed WEST! Frankly, I am appalled that my $1600 pocket computer has failed at the most basic of tasks.

It sounds like the Compass app isn't as accurate as you're expecting.
To start, if you have a case or screen protector installed, remove this first and then test the Compass app to see if it works.
If not, then then go to Settings > Compass and make sure True North is disabled. If it's not, disable it and test it again.
If that doesn't help and you want to leave the True North feature enabled, then go to Settings > Privacy > Location Services > System Services> Compass Calibration.
