Anyone know why a red mi to phone I on would be on top left of iPhone X screen?

Are you using iOS 14? (Settings > General > About > Software Version)

are you sure it's in the upper left? I believe the microphone icon should be in the upper right.. unless it varies by phone model.

is it a round dot?

About the orange and green indicators in your iPhone status bar - Apple Support

Control Center is supposed to tell you what's using the microphone or camera (pull down from the upper right of the screen)
