Finder relaunch deleted everything off desktop

My MacBook Air just relaunched finder and now everything is missing from my desktop and the rainbow curser won’t go away.

What do I do and how do I get all the stuff from my desktop back?

Force it to shut down and restart.

If Finder hasn't completed relaunching (hence the rainbow cursor), then it probably hasn't rebuilt the items on the Desktop.
