I received an email today that says it’s from Apple. It is about a charge on my Apple account that I did not make. Then it asked for my social security number and a credit card. How can I check to see if this is really from Apple and not a scam??

I received an email today that appears it’s from Apple. It is in reference to a purchase I did not make. While trying to correct this, I’m asked to give my social security number and a credit card. Is the a scam? Why would Apple ask for my social security number?

That is a scam. If the only indication of the charges is from an email or text, be aware that it may be a phishing attempt to get you to log in to a site that appears to be Apple and divulge your password or credit card information. If you gave your Apple password in response, you should change it: Change your Apple ID password - Apple Support

and any other information you gave is also compromised.
