Got this solution from Apple support and it worked on my iPad Air 2 running vers. 14.4.2.
Go to Settings>Safari>Request Desktop Website and toggle to off.

Hi Skoora,
It looks like when you try to access Google Maps with Safari on your iPad the app closes unexpectedly. Making sure your apps work properly and allow you to search for locations is important. We're glad to help.
Does Safari close when using other sites or just when trying to use Google Maps? Take a look at the resource below for help when apps close unexpectedly.
If an app unexpectedly quits, stops responding, or won’t open
We hope this helps. Have a good day!
Using iOS 14.3 on my iPad Air 2. If I am on Safari and tap on a map that shows up after I have searched for a destination, the google map crashes, reloads and crashes again. Then I get the message: "A repeated error has occurred." The same thing happens if I use Safari to go to google.com and then click on the map icon.
I have no other apps open when on Safari, and I just cleared all my storage and history.
I have posted this problem on the Google community support site. Lots of other people are having this problem. The consistent reply from the Google experts is that "this is most likely a safari / ipad os 14.x issue."
Is Apple addressing this problem?
I had this before and After a complete reinstall from a backup. Basically ONLY Google maps is affected.
I think it was an Update of IOS that fixed it for me.
I have been having exactly the same problem. It doesn’t matter whether I go to the Google page and select the maps option or click on a map link on a company website. The Google map page loads, crashes, loads again and then permanently crashes. So frustrating.
All the fixes I read talk about loading the app, but I don’t see how that is a fix.
same issue 🤯🤯🤯
on Safari: a blank page with “a problem repeatedly occurred”
on Firefox: the page is const reloading
ipad air 2 (2015)
software 14.4
if you don’t wanna create the first army of digital terrorists, please solve the issue
Silence from Apple
My husband doesn't have this problem on his 7th Gen iPad even though he's also using iOS 14.3, so I think it may be a problem unique to the iPad Air 2.
Bit of that’s the case APPLE WHY???!!!
I have also been experiencing this problem. A ‘problem repeatedly occurred’ when trying to access google map in safari. Is there a way to resolve this?
Same probleem here for a couple of months nog, when is Apple gonne act on this??
Skoora - Sorry, but this does not solve the problem.
