I Have an early 2009 iMac and it has never been able to see my iPhone when I connect to it. It sees it in iTunes but that is all.

Because iTunes is the macOS App that is used to Syncs, Backup and Manage Data between the older Mac's and iPhone's, iPad's and iPod's.
