USB 3.2 Type C only 40MB/s?!

Hi,

I got a USB 3.2 Type C cable with my Samsung T7, and when I first got it, I was getting the advertised 1050MB/s data transfer speeds - but I noticed recently that it takes ages to transfer anything, and after a speed check, its only 40MB/s now. I know the problem isn't the drive itself, as I am getting 400MB/s with the Type C to Type A cable.

Any ideas as to what this problem could be? is it my iMac's thunderbolt ports? I have a 2020 iMac, 27 inch. This is really frustrating me as I need to transfer data for work, and having that full 1050MB/s speed really helps. I would love to see if there's a solution outside of me buying another cable.

Thanks!

Try using another USB-C port.

What OS are you running? If you are running Big Sur, then maybe it is a compatibility issue with the Samsung T7.

Is macOS managing the drive with HFS+, APFS, or exFAT? Or are you using the third party proprietary Samsung NTFS driver? If the latter, then make sure to update the software to the latest version and make sure the driver and the T7 is compatible with your OS. It is always best to let macOS manage the external drives.

There was another thread recently on these forums which mentioned speed issues as you have described. I don't recall if it was a Big Sur compatibility issue or a compatibility issue with the new M1 Mac. I know for certain that the M1 Macs have an issue with the Samsung T7 since another user reported it uses the JMicro USB controller which is not currently compatible with the M1 Macs (not sure if it could be a Big Sur issue as well).
