external hdd capacity

I have a Late 2012 Mac Mini and have a few external HDD's mounted, the largest of which is 10TB. I want to mount a 12TB so I can eliminate some of the other ones but have not been able to. The message I get is "the disk is too large to be supported by the given partition scheme". Is there a way to fix this? It is out of the box and I have not formatted it or anything yet.

Have you tried using Disk Utility to re-partition and format the drive? Select the physical drive within Disk Utility and erase it as GUID partition and MacOS Extended (Journaled) if it will only be used with macOS. Otherwise erase it as GUID partition and exFAT if you need to share it with a Windows system.

Since newer version of Disk Utility hide the physical drive from view by default, you will need to click on "View" within Disk Utility and select "Show All Devices" so that the physical drive appears on the left pane of Disk Utility.
