Switch emails and set up Icloud

so I need some advice- my mom signed up years ago with an "@gmail.com" as the iCloud account on her iPhone. The system keeps asking to set up an "@icloud.com" but she is afraid that if I create the iCloud email that she will lose her messages and contacts.

Is there a way to keep but set up the iCloud account?

New iphone my daughter got a new iPhone 6s for Christmas. When I originally started it up I used my Apple ID. When I realized that she was getting my messages and calls I got her a new email for her own Apple ID. I thought I had reset it back to the factory settings up it must not of. It’s still under my name but her new email. It changed the email on My own phone and computer. And now I can’t get it to change back to my email for my phone. And all my contacts are still on my daughters phone.

Try going to https://appleid.apple.com to see what her ID's are.

So if she does and the Mac is saying to use all feature but create an iCloud by finishing the set up. She won’t lose messages and other key parts?

If she has an @gmail email address as her Apple ID, then she should already have an @iCloud email address that serves as her Apple ID as well.
