New iPhone 12 Pro and having trouble pairing my Apple Watch

I cannot pair my watch to my new iphone 12 Pro. Any ideas? I always get "stuck" on the screen on my watch with the globe of matter just moving around!! My phone screen (even though I am in th eWatch app) is just black.
