Moving iCloud storage from Individual to existing family plan

when I switch my account from my individual iCloud to an existing family plan do I lose my saved files and photos? I am afraid to click the "use family plan" and lose years of photos.

No. The storage doesn't move -- it is still on iCloud under your Apple ID. It is a change in how the storage is billed (and in the amount of storage available to you). Other information is in: Share an iCloud storage plan with your family - Apple Support
