When I follow Apple's instruction "in the Home app on your iOS or iPadOS device, touch and hold a HomePod", all that happens is the song it's playing opens; I therefore can't access the settings. How do I simply select a HomePod? Why isn't this working?

And then you scroll the page up to see any alarms and the settings gear wheel. Tap the gear wheel.

How odd, the gear wheel should be there. It is even referenced in this set of instructions which appear still be valid: Set up HomePod stereo pairing - Apple Support.
Anyway, glad you got it fixed. 🙂

Oohhhhh. Not visually evident at first, but you are, of course, right. Still no gear icon, but I did see the command for creating a stereo pair, which is all I wanted to do anyhow. Thanks!
