Below the wifit indicator and the battery indicator I get a straight horizontal line on my I phone 12 Pro (att). What is that?

Like Lawrence said, that line is just there to let you know that you can access the Control Center by swiping down from the upper right corner.
That is probably the reminder that you can open the Control Center by dragging that line down.
It would be better if you can please re-post with a screenshot, in order to understand the phenomenon better. Images / pictures speak louder than words. Do not provide any personal credentials, such as email id, apple id, IMEI number, Serial Number, Phone number, Order ID, if you are sharing a map ensure your location is not identifiable. Etc.
