Tom's answer 9 years ago was appropriate for the time, and reflects the state of NLEs and hardware in 2011 that struggled to work with H.264 formats. Things have changed substantially since then.
Handbrake would be my recommendation for your task as well.

If disk space is not a concern, the most edit friendly format is ProRes, but files transcoded to ProRes are much larger than the original files. It also has the advantage of being a very durable for the edit process.
You could do a test using ProRes 422 as the format, to see if you are OK with the size of files produced.

I still have a lot of mpeg videos from my old sony camcorder and want to use them in FCPX. I am searching a converter to a format that FCPX accepts, but without lost of quality.
I bought the Sonycamcorder in 2004, so I think mpeg1? It is not visible, these are capture files from Sony.
MPEG Streamclip hasn’t worked in the last few OSs. What OS and FCP versions are you using?
