iTunes unable to download new iPhone software

hello

when attempting to download new iPhone software (4.0.1) using iTunes, the download lasts between 1 second and 2 minutes before failing with the message "There was a problem downloading the software for the iPhone '<my iphone>'. The network connection timed out. Make sure your network settings are correct and your network connection is active, or try again later".

i have tried again later about 40 or 50 times and it is getting very frustrating. i did a web search and people have suggested temporarily disabling my firewall and/or anti-virus. i have done both and this has no effect.

all other applications on my computer which require an internet connection are working fine (with anti-virus and firewall running). i am using iTunes 9.2.1.5 and windows 7.

Your problem is a known bug/feature of the iTunes download software. The communication will timeout when it shall save the downloaded file onto the disc. If this takes more than 30 seconds (or so), the download is timed out.

To solve this problem I do a manual update of the iOS 4.0.1 software. First I need to find the *iOS 4.0.1 zip file* on the internet. I normally google for *'readmondpie download iOS 4.0.1'* or similar. After some search I find a link that points to an Apple download zip file. I download the file (>300 MB) and rename it so its file extension is 'ipsw' instead of 'zip'.

Next I start the iTunes and in the program tab, I hold down the shift key when selecting the ' Upgrade' button. I do now get a file selection box and I select the previously downloaded file. The upgrade the continous as before.
