PC gaming on a Mac with Bootcamp

After doing research and having successfully created a Gaming partition on my new iMac I wanted to share what I found.

Introduction

This process is not recommended for the Mac beginner or even for the casual user. The following is a suggested process for configuring a Mac to be a PC gaming tool. Most Mac users would consider this use to be sacrilege but we gamers, that love the Mac, from time to time will find a game designed only for Windows that must be explored. (Only for Intel Macs)

BE SURE to back up everything you have before attempting to create a second storage drive partition. Better yet, use a Mac that has no important files on it as your Gaming Computer. That way when you melt the Graphics Card you might be less angry with yourself.

I installed Boot Camp on a brand new 27” iMac with an i9 Intel chip and the best AMD Graphics Card available. This procedure will not work on the new Apple Silicon M1 or other Apple processors.

Boot Camp is a drive partition creation tool that will allow you to carve out a separate partition on your hard drive to load Windows 10. Once you have gone through all the steps you will be able to switch between the two operating systems simply by pressing the option key during startup.

Install Boot Camp

After you have backed up all the important files on your computer (s) start at Apple’s support page.

Bootcamp will take you through the process step by step. My advice is to consider your storage needs before creating the partition. If you intend to have more than one game loaded at a time, start with more memory than they suggest.

Also it is critical that you download the proper graphics driver for your Mac since you will be running Windows 10.

If you are a believer in Apple products as I am you will likely own an Apple TV which happens to support Bluetooth game controllers and also supports apps from game portals like Steam. If you have a controller and have downloaded the steam controller app, you can sit in your living room and enjoy PC gaming at full resolution.

This response from Bob above is a perfect example why I needed to do the research for my self. None of the prior questions about Boot Camp in this forum had really been thoughtfully answered, nor had the issue of downloading appropriate graphics drivers been covered. Most of the answers had the terse and critical tonal qualities of the brief and off-topic answer above. I took the time to explain in detail how I managed to find the tools to successfully configure my iMac. This is for anyone unsure of the process. Telling me that what I did has been done "for a decade" misses the point entirely.

There is a lot of documentation saying what you repeated. I'm not sure what your point was in posting. Your analysis is correct but are you going to next post that Microsoft Office runs on Macs? Maybe you will post that Virtual Machines run on Macs thereby providing an alternative way to install Windows.

I was not trying to be critical, unlike your response, but rather pointing out to passers by that the capability you document already exists and has been deployed and proven for some. time Sometimes readers need to know that what they are reading about is not a new concept or process.
