Why do a orange dot appear at the top of my phone when I make or receive a call?

iPhone 8, iOS 14

it's a feature added to iOS 14 to help you know when your microphone is being used by an app.

when you are using the phone for a call, your microphone is used to relay your voice to the other person on the call.

You will see a similar green dot if the camera is being used, ie when using FaceTime or in a Zoom meeting etc
