Battery dies suddenly on iPhone 6... I've tried recalibrating.

My iPhone 6 began to suddenly die, often when my battery life reads 40% or more. When I plug it in, it acts as though it were completely dead, but then recharges fairly quickly. I've read here that this is a common issue but is a different issue than the one reported on the 6s. The two recommended fixes were to replace the battery (mine is less than a year old and shows as 100% life) or to recalibrate the battery life sensor. I've tried the steps outlined for recalibration, but it takes more than a minute to get any charge back (and I can never get the phone to register 1% life). Any advice?

Hi Don,

Thanks for reaching out to Apple Support Communities. It sounds like you're having an issue with you iPhone battery. We're happy to assist.

We recommend checking out the section "Preventing unexpected shutdowns" from the article here: iPhone Battery and Performance

Also, you stated the battery was replaced within the last year. Was the replacement done by Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider? Additionally, do you notice a the powering off occurs when using a specific app or with any use?

Cheers!

Thanks for the reply, Melissa. I read the section you recommended. My iPhone 'Maximum Capacity' under 'Battery Health' has shown 100% since I replaced the battery. I did the replacement myself in February 2019. Note that mine is a 6s (not an iPhone 6, as indicated in my original post).

I do not believe the shutdowns are due to a particular app, though there are a few apps I use almost constantly. (Battery usage by app over the past 10 days shows 14% Safari, 9% News, 9% Message.) This morning I left for a run with Bluetooth earbuds and watch connected, and the phone died within ~5 minutes (less than an hour after unplugging it from being on the charger all night).

BTW, if I look in 'Settings>Battery', the last recorded 'battery level' yesterday (around 7pm, when it died) appears to be just over 75%. I just now disabled 'performance management protections' and will see if I notice any difference in shutdowns frequency and/or battery life reporting.

Did I read correctly that you replaced the battery yourself? iPhone is NOT a DIY repairable device and if you did replace the battery yourself, you likely messed something up. Apple doesn't sell OEM parts to people. And you say you are getting a battery health indication, which for an aftermarket battery shouldn't even display a rating.

You could take the phone to your closest Apple Store Genius Bar, but Apple typically will not offer support to a device opened by anyone other than Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider.

Best bet at this point would be to take it to an iFixit kind of store or kiosk which you can find in most malls and towns.

I've replaced many iPhone batteries over the years, and this one seemed to behave fine until a recent IOS upgrade. Settings> Battery behaves as if it is a genuine Apple battery, but I know that it is not and --based on the article provided, etc.-- likely that the battery started malfunctioning with the upgrade.

I will try another battery replacement (maybe via iFixIt, etc.). Thanks to all who have replied.
