may i activate my iPhone with Consumer Cellular in order to use the flexible no-interest payment plan on Apple Pay

I want to upgrade to the iPhone 12 Max from my iPhone 8+. I don't owe any money on the 8+ and I no longer wish to be with Sprint (have no contract at this time). The fine print seems to say I can't get the sim-free iPhone and then use Consumer Cellular if I'm doing monthly payments. Does anyone else read it this way?

Thanks for providing all the details. I also did some reading for you. I have always purchased SIM-Free iPhones and paid in Full. That is my experience. I then used the iPhone with any carrier that I chose.

You are right about the multiple types of payment plans and some are associated with AT&T or Verizon. There is one that involves Citizens Bank and one plan that involves the Apple Card. All are 24 Months and interest free.

  1. The AT&T and Verizon plans requires the iPhone to be locked to them. They do provide a small discount by locking your iPhone with them (along with the service) for two years. Of course, these two will get their money back form the service bill side over two years.
  2. The Citizens Bank financed plan requires the buyer to activate the iPhone with one of these four carriers. AT&T, Verizon, Sprint or T-Mobile. As soon as you activate your iPhone with one of those 4 then it will be locked to the carrier that activated the iPhone.
  3. Then there is purchase with the Apple Card. If you have the Apple Card then you can finance your iPhone on it for 24 months and you can purchase a SIM-Free iPhone using this method. The Sim-Free iPhone will remain unlocked for use with any carrier at any time.
  4. Finally the pay up front option. Pay in Full at once and the benefits are the same as point 3 above.

I believe, that Option 3 or 4 works best for you because you wanted to use Consumer Cellular. I checked out Consumer Cellular's website and noted that the iPhone 12 (all models) will work on their network. I think that a SIM-Free iPhone + Consumer Cellular saves you the most money.

Good Luck in decision making. If you can, or want to, then please let me know how you decided to go further. Thanks.

This was the language of concern under the FAQs when looking at the iPhone 12 Pro Max purchasing page. "Monthly pricing: Available to qualified customers and requires 0% APR, 24-month installment loan with Citizens One or Apple Card Monthly Installments and iPhone activation with AT&T, T-Mobile, or Verizon for purchases in an Apple Store. Taxes and shipping not included in monthly pricing. Additional Apple Card Monthly Installments terms are in the  Customer Agreement. Additional iPhone Payments terms are here." (The last blue link takes you to additional terms which reiterate the same language.)

Again, the Apple chat guy explained it depends on which financing method you use.

I have always purchased SIM Free iPhones directly from Apple and activated the iPhone with whichever carrier I wanted. No issues. I just had to make sure that the iPhone that I would be purchasing worked with the carrier that I had chosen. In your case, you should contact Consumer Cellular and ensure that your iPhone 12 Pro Max will work with them.

I am not sure which Fine Print that you are referring to and on which website. Are you planning to buy a SIM Free iPhone directly from Apple? Not sure to whom will you be paying monthly payments. Please provide more details. Thanks.

I went on to chat with an Apple rep, and it seems the difference is how you plan to finance. If you finance one way, you must agree to activate with one of the four listed cellular providers. However, if you finance by another means, there is no restriction with whom you may choose to activate. So I just have to use the method which doesn't require me to activate with one of the "Big Four" companies and allows me to buy sim-free. Thanks.
