Clearing Cache

Without using free/paid apps what is the best manual way to clean up cache on a MacBook pro? How often should it be done?

there are 3 types of cache

  1. System Cache
  2. Browser Cache
  3. App Cache

Manually Remove Cache

To delete app cache (which is also called user cache) manually, follow these steps:

    • Open Finder and select Go > Go to Folder
    • Type in ~/Library/Caches and hit Enter
    • Backup the folders if you are worried about something going wrong
    • Keep the folders, but go into each one and delete the files inside

Clear Browser Cache

  • Go to Safari > Preferences
  • Select the Advanced tab
  • Enable Show Develop menu
  • Go to the Develop section in the menu bar
  • Click on Empty Caches

Edit: I figured out how to clear safari cache/cookies before I made this post. My apologies for not specifying before, but for user and system cache what is the best manual way of clearing cache if need at all. Please state reasons for clearing if needed or not.

I see multiple people claiming ~/Library/Cache algorithm is the way to go, but others saying its not necessarily. Please be specific.

Also thank you HWTech for the safe mode response. I believe anything in safe mode if its necessary is always a good option. I would just like to get more feedback from the community.

Thanks all in advance.

Reboot into Safe Mode which will automatically delete temp & cache files. Reboot normally.

Most web browsers have a menu option or an option in the "Settings" to clear their browser cache.

If an app doesn't have an option of clearing the app's cache, then it is best to leave it alone or it could adversely affect the app.

Definitely do not use any third party cleaning apps as they cause more problems than they solve plus they affect system performance.

If you are having a specific issue you are trying to solve, then run the Apple Diagnostics. To look for possible software issues run EtreCheck (no install necessary if downloaded from the website) and post the report here using the "Additional Text" icon which looks like a piece of paper.
