Child can’t FaceTime with iPad

I set up a child’s account on my son’s new iPad. I enabled screen time and allowed the FaceTime app, but he’s unable to make or receive FaceTime calls. It’s completely grayed out when he goes into his contacts. If I initiate the FaceTime call from my device, it rings once and instantly turns off; he never has the option to answer the call.

Thank you for taking the time to respond. I have tried all of your suggestions without success. When I open the FaceTime app on his iPad, it does not allow me to enter a password. When I try to access FaceTime or the Messages app from the settings menu on the iPad, both apps are grayed out. I must have disallowed them somehow, but cannot figure out how to enable them either on his iPad or on my phone.

NYCMaman,

You're very welcome. Let's see if we can figure out what is prohibiting his FaceTime.

If you are managing his settings on his iPad directly, this article is a very valuable resource:

Set up Screen Time for a family member on iPad - Apple Support

First, note that he will need to have Contacts enabled in iCloud, and you (and anyone else with whom you want him to be able to communicate on his iPad) will need to have your contact saved in Contacts. If contacts are not enabled, or if you're not in his Contacts list, you won't be able to communicate with him via FaceTime or iMessage if you have limits set in Screen Time.

These details may also help us help you determine where the restriction is in his Screen Time settings:

  • Downtime: Do you have a Downtime schedule set? If so, what is the schedule?
  • App Limits: Are there any apps, categories, or websites selected in App Limits? If so, which ones? Tap the arrow in each category to reveal the specific apps in the category. For example, if you have Social selected here, you may need to go into the submenu and make sure you don't have FaceTime blocked.
  • Communication Limits: Make sure that your contact is saved in his Contacts and you have communication set to Contacts Only.
  • Always Allowed: Check Contacts > Specific Contacts and add yourself (and anyone else) to always allow communication, then ensure you have FaceTime added to the Allowed Apps section.
  • Content & Privacy Restrictions: There are a few different sections to look at here. First, in Allowed Apps, make sure FaceTime is enabled.

Hopefully these suggestions will help.

Good luck!

NYCMaman,

These screenshots are perfect. Thank you! We're not seeing anything here that would block his ability to FaceTime. If you disable Screen Time (temporarily) altogether, restart his iPad, and attempt a FaceTime call - does it go through?

If you haven't yet, you might try that. It will help you determine whether the issue is with FaceTime itself or the Screen Time settings.

Regards.

Hi, NYCMaman.

We appreciate you taking the time to post in the Apple Support Communities.

We understand that after setting up your son’s new iPad, he’s not able to make or receive FaceTime calls. We know how important it is to be able to reach out to them, so let’s see if we can find out why it isn’t allowing the calls.

We can start with this article: If you can't make a FaceTime call on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support

Note that you’ll want to make sure that you have both Camera and FaceTime enabled at Content & Privacy Restrictions > Allowed Apps for him.

You might also check to make sure that his Apple ID has been activated for FaceTime. If you have issues, check the troubleshooting here: If you get an error when trying to activate iMessage or FaceTime

Warmest Regards.

  • Downtime: is set up, but FaceTime and messages don’t work at any time of day.
  • App limits: not set up
  • always allowed: contacts have been always allowed, I added the family members that he can reach out to to this list
  • content and privacy restrictions: FaceTime is allowed, messages doesn’t appear on this list

Thank you again for going through this with me.
