stuck on black screen with apple logo been like that for a couple hours no progress bar

Force Shutdown by Holding Power Button. Connect to charger >> disconnect any and all external drives >> Startup via Power Button and Immediately hold Shift Key. This is Are Mode and it will do a Repair Disk, clear cache files and only load Apple Software need to start the computer. It will load very slowly - Normal. Then if all goes well will present the Login Screen and login. Let it run 5 - 7 minutes and then restart in Normal Mode.
