An iPhone 6 is outdated now and it's hardware cannot support iOS 13 and 14. You are stuck on iOS 12.5.

But SMS should work regardless, please contact your cellular provider / carrier for that.

What does the version of iOS you're running have to do with sms?

SMS is a carrier feature. If you have a problem with sms messaging, contact your cellular carrier.
