External SSD for late 2014 Mac Mini - Thunderbolt 2

I have a Late 2014 Mac Mini with a 3 GHz Dual-Core Intel Core i7 processor and Thunderbolt 2 and USB 3 ports. I use this for music production and want to connect a fast external SSD to hold my VST libraries. Does anyone have any suggestions? I see a lot of Thunderbolt 3 SSDs out there but I don't think I can use them. Thoughts and recommendations are greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Mac mini, macOS 10.15

There are some Thunderbolt 2 External Hard Drives and RAID boxes out there, but they are mostly for 2.5" hard drives and expensive.

It is far cheaper to just get and use an external USB 3.0 SATA SSD or build one using an empty 2.5" USB 3.0 enclosure and 2.5" SATA SSD to use with your 2014 Mac Mini.

  1. The USB 3.0 ports are plenty fast enough for a SATA SSD.
  2. USB 3.0 is a lot cheaper than getting and using a TB 2 external drive.
  3. You won't need to fuss with unreliable adapter compatibility or a flaky connection.

I use the LaCie and Transcend Thunderbolt SSD drives for both archiving and OS boot.

Booting from the TB SSD allows you to take the drive away from the machine in the event you need to leave for security...

If you look around, you can get a good deal - I picked up 10 of the LaCie 1TB SSD for $60 each....

Thunderbolt external has twice the data throughput of USB-3.

I use them on: 2013 iMac, 2012 Mac Mini i7, and 2014 MBP.
