Photos have disappeared

Can anyone tell me how to retrieve my photos on my iPad. I recently turned on iCloud photos. Now all my photos have disappeared from my iPad. They are not in my recently deleted folder and are no where to be seen when I log in to iCloud. Please tell me they are not gone for good. 😢

Did you check the Photos app on the device? Alternatively - If you're missing photos or videos in the Photos app - Apple Support.
