Low Memory Warning on Macbook 2012

I have a pop up window telling me "Your computer is low on memory. To free up some memory, please close a few applications." Same as this guy: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/251034595?answerId=251956030022#251956030022

I run Etrecheck, but can´t identify the problem. I would appreciate some support. Greets from Germany

MacBook Pro 13″, macOS 10.15

This generally happens for 2 reasons

A) The boot disk is low for free storage, and macOS cannot create page/swap files where it can write the contents of virtual memory. This is rarely the cause, but it can happen.

If you have very little free storage on your boot volume, you should free up some storage.

B) a process or set of processes are consuming an excessive amount of virtual memory (sometimes because of a memory leak, and sometimes because you are processing huge files, such as video editing, large format graphics editing, etc... and you do not have very much RAM in your system).

Virtual memory is tracked via kernel based page tables. The more virtual memory being managed, the more page tables created. If enough virtual memory is requested, the page tables will grow to a size that ends up consuming all of the real RAM so that there is nothing left for the programs to use.

You can look at your memory usage via

Applications -> Utilities -> Activity Monitor -> View -> All Processes -> Memory tab

Chance are you will find a background process that has a very high memory consumption value, or a set of processes (such as tabs in a web browser) that are eating up memory.
